How to get a guard card?

In the state of Florida, anyone who wants to work for an armed or unarmed security service needs a guard card, also called a security license. When on duty, security guards are required to carry both a business ID and their security license. The guard must be given the license if they are a member of the armed forces or a state employee who works for the Division of Licensing, as required by state security laws.

To get a guard license, you have to go to an approved security school for your guard card training. If you are active in Florida law enforcement, you can obtain the license without completing any extra security guard training. Those former service members who worked as military police officers can also be eligible for a security license.

Before they can apply for a guard license, everyone else who wants to learn how to become a security guard must first take 40 hours of security training. Before applicants can send their applications to the state, they must fill out a security license application, pay a $45.00 fee, and pass a background check by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement. For applicants, the state’s approval to grant a license might take anywhere between 30 and 90 days.

The Division of Licensing is in charge of the security license. A security license is needed for anyone who works for a security company that hires security guards. When a private security guard works without a license, both they and the company that hired them may face penalties. It is against Florida law to do security work without a license, especially if you are armed.

How to become an armed security guard?

Security officers in Florida can carry guns if they have a license and work at an armed security post. A state-issued firearms license, also called a “Class G license,” is required for security guards to work armed. For a security firm to hire an armed security guard, they must have a D security license and a state-wide weapons license. To earn a Class G license, you must attend the security G license classes and complete 28 hours of weapons instruction.

Those who want to get a security G license must pass the test and the range qualification with a score of 70% or higher. In this class, students will learn about gun laws, safety rules, how to shoot accurately, and how guns work. Before they can apply for an armed security license, candidates have to pass a background check.
