Currently, state law allows armed and unarmed security officers to complete an online security training program to obtain Florida security licenses. However, the bill (SB 1474) will enable the online training of unarmed instruction for the 40 hours of required security guard training. In contrast, online training for armed courses may go for 20 hours, and the remainder must be completed in person for 8 hours of firearms training and qualification.
The bill’s sponsor is Republican Senator Bradley of Orange Park. The House bill passed without debate, and the Senate unanimously approved the bill.
The bill would update the state’s security certification procedures and be comparable to numerous states, including Georgia and California, allowing security officers to complete their security training online.
Online Security Course Requirements
The state requires that any security courses conducted online must be presented by a licensed security school located in Florida. The school must have a secure learning management system verifying the student’s identity and providing live security classes online. The security courses can now be self-paced training and require a live instructor teaching the online courses for security guards.
Unarmed Online Security Training
During COVID-19 Emergency Order, security classes were allowed online, and many security schools used Zoom and Facebook to provide online security classes. The state will not allow this under the new online security training law. The online school must track the student’s time on the system and ensure the students are present with random security questions that will lock the screen if not answered. Students must also verify attendance by uploading a self-image daily. When the student completes the online security class for the unarmed training, they will then be able to complete the 175-question timed test. Once they complete the course and test, they can download the security certificate.

Armed Online Security Course
The new law for armed security training online allows students to complete 20 hours of online classroom training and 8 hours of in-person range training. Once students complete the online training portion, they can schedule to qualify with a class K firearms instructor to complete the required training hours and range qualification.
The security D license is required to work private security services in the State of Florida. Florida requires any security officer working private security under a licensed security agency must have a class d security license, and armed security services must have a D and G license. Online security guard training allows the person to complete the training anywhere they are in or out of state. It makes completing the required hours more flexible for the student.
